Zeus, moved by Alpheus' pain, turned him into a river, allowing him, from the Peloponnese in Greece, to travel all the way across the Ionian Sea to reunite with his beloved spring. The myth still lives today on the island of Ortigia thanks to the so-called Aretusa Fountain, a body of water that flows into the Porto Grande of Syracuse.
